    Lucas Radebe

At the recent Trust Board meeting a decision was taken to support the campaign
to make Lucas Radebe a Freeman of the City of Leeds.

We would like to encourage all Leeds fans to lend their support to this initiative
and to spread the word as widely as possible.

Here is what those behind this campaign have to say about it.-
Like many Leeds United supporters, we've often been frustrated by the lack
of recognition given to our heroes. Don Revie and John Charles both richly
deserved knighthoods, but never received that honour, and rather than
praised for its achievements the Don's great team is branded as 'dirty'.
Similarly, unlike many other cities across England, the City of Leeds has
never recognised a Leeds United player/manager with the title of freeman.

For this reason, the loadsofleeds team started the 'Make the Chief a
Freeman' campaign in order to convince Leeds City Council to recognise a
true Leeds United Legend. The title of Freeman is the highest homour a
city can bestow upon an individual. We feel that Lucas Radebe is the
perfect candidate to receive the Freedom of the City of Leeds, not just
for the contribution he made during his playing career, but also for the
magnificent way in which the Chief has represented LUFC and the City of
    Leeds in his ambassadorial activities.

The campaign was launched on 26th March 2011, and is being organised by
loadsofleeds.com. As well as the online petition, which will be presented
to Leeds City Council, regular blog entries provide campaign updates and
further information concerning the campaign's activities.

The 'Make the Chief a Freeman' campaign has already received significant
backing. As well as articles in the Yorkshire Evening Post and the
Bradford Telegraph and Argus, articles featuring our crusade have appeared
on Leeds United forums such as Vital Leeds United and even the South
Africa info website. Lucas Radebe's biographer, Richard Coomber, has
already backed the freeman campaign, which will feature in the June/July
issue of Leeds Leeds Leeds magazine.
